STRUGGLES
native struggles

We will be posting these photos in a series. This first page will deal with the period between 1985-1989.

These photos were taken when several Indian Rights organizations (including Colorado AIM) traveled to Nicaragua as part of a fact finding mission. There, they visited the Indian Nations on the Atlantic Coast. The Indians of the Atlantic Coast were waging an armed struggle against the Sandinista Government. Colorado AIM had initially supported the Sandinista Revolution and was surprised to see that the Indian people had taken up arms against the Sandinistas. In fact, Brooklyn Rivera, who is in many of the photos, led the organization of Miskito, Sumo and Rama indians that had the acronym of MISURASATA. This stood for Miskito, Sumo, Rama, SANDANISTA WORKING TOGETHER. After the revolution, the Atlantic Coast Indians were not given the right to self-determination and, having no other viable alternative, took up arms against the Government. After their visits to the Atlantic Coast, Colorado AIM announced that they would stand in solidarity with the Indian Peoples of the Atlantic Coast.  For more background, click here
