American Indian Movement Chapter Denver/Boulder
Reorganizes
New Structure Allows for Greater Participation and Wider Agenda
Dear allies,
Today, Russell Means, state executive director of the
American Indian Movement of Colorado announced that the Denver/Boulder Chapter
of Colorado AIM had agreed to a reorganization that would expand the mission and
agenda of the organization. It was expected that the Ignacio chapter of Colorado
AIM would adopt a similar reorganization.
Under the reorganization, the chapter would organize
into several sub-councils to address questions of education, employment,
homelessness and political issues, among several others. The chapter will be
guided through the operation of a Council of Elders, and a Leadership Council of
several members, selected by the membership, which will replace the previous
positions of co-directors. The previous co-directors, Ward Churchill and Glenn
Morris, will remain active in the chapter. Means will continue as the state
executive director.
Means explained that the reorganization was the result
of the successes and growth of the chapter, and the decision for AIM to become
more proactive in the area of Indian affairs. "It is time for us to be more
proactive, and not always reacting to other's agendas. We have a positive set of
principles from which we operate, and we are going to continue our mission
toward the ultimate liberation of and freedom for Indian people."
