8 September 1992

Mr. Joseph B. Verrengia
Science Writer Rocky Mountain News

Dear Mr. Verrengia:

While reading your 5 September article on the Aztec exhibit, we in the American Indian Movement of Colorado were angered by your insinuations about our movement. The implication in the article clearly was that AIM was contemplating a "politically motivated disruption" of the Aztec exhibit.

We cannot comprehend what motivated you to mention AIM in the article, since the mention of our organization was of absolutely no relevance to the subject matter. Our only conclusion was that there was a motivation, not journalistic, that inspired you. If the intent was to portray AIM as a violent and disruptive organization, then we demand a retraction and a printed apology. Our movement is dedicated to the attainment of justice for American Indian peoples. For that we offer no apology.

We had no plans to demonstrate against the Aztec exhibit, and if you had bothered to contact us for clarification of that point, you could have reported the facts. Because you did not contact us, we can only conclude that you had no intention of reporting other than your pre -conceived notions of the "truth." Perhaps your intention was to color AIM as nay-saying malcontents. While there is certainly plenty for us, as indigenous peoples, to revolt against, we are only negative about those things that delay or deny justice for oppressed peoples. If you had bothered to read you own paper, on August 30, 1992, page 8, Bob Jackson quoted me as being generally positive about the exhibit.

Colorado AIM is embroiled in a serious social debate over the legitimacy of the Columbian Quincentenary. The stakes in this debate are high enough, and the prospects for conflict are sufficient by themselves, without you embellishing issues or over-dramatizing our position to liven up your articles.

We expect an immediate and complete clarification of this matter, in writing, in the next issue of your paper.

On behalf of Colorado AIM,

Glenn T. Morris
